Hukilau Marketplace, located within the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, offers a vintage throwback to 1950s Hawaii. This nostalgic venue features local food, regional goods, and a warm, family-like hospitality. Whether visiting weekly or during an Oahu vacation, Hukilau Marketplace welcomes guests with open arms, inviting them to experience the aloha of this charming, century-old community.
The hukilau was a popular, impromptu luau experience for visitors in the 1940s and 1950s. Visitors would come to Laie to watch the netting of fish and then enjoy a feast and music with community members on the beach. This enjoyable experience led to the creation of the catchy tune, "The Hukilau Song," composed in 1948. (“Oh, we’re going to a hukilau, a huki, huki, huki huki, hukilau. Everybody loves a hukilau, where the laulau is the kau kau at the big lü‘au…”). This popular beachside experience eventually transitioned into what is now the Polynesian Cultural Center.
